Weekly Blog #4

Pick a teacher at your school (each a different teacher, please, you can't all choose me or Mr. Sellers), and then define the rhetorical choices they make to present their school "persona." These choices are not limited to verbal and non-verbal communication, but include clothes, appearance of room, actions, reactions of others, etc.

For example: He always stands outside his room to greet each of his students as they enter, but he is never smiling. What he is saying is: I have to be here and so do you.

Well, because I'm the first to do this, I'm going to write about Mr. Holt. He comes off as a pretty laid back person because of his clothes. Except for the first day of school, he has never dressed too profesionally. He never wears a tie and his clothes fit loosley. When he addresses someone in the halls he doesn't say, "Hello." Instead he greets his students by saying "whats up?" or "Hey, how's it goin'?"
Inside his classrooms, he's a little bit different. He's even different with class types. For example, in my studyhall, Mr. Holt keeps a serious face and intimidating attitude. His body language suggests that he doesn't want to be there, and he is greatly annoyed by this obbligation. However, in AP English, Mr. Holt is not only nice, but witty and sarcastic. The way he walks around the room and has everyone participate shows that he cares.
The classroom has posters and colorful bulletin boards. The blinds and door are always left open. All of these elements make the room much more inviting than other classrooms in the school such as Mr. Seller's. Posted on the bulletin boards is some artwork from Mr. Holt's daughters. He also talks about his family a lot. This shows a more sensitive side. It proves that he has a life outside of school and he doesn't mind sharring some of these things with his students.

Except for the first day of school, he has never dressed too professionally. He never wears a tie and his clothes fit loosely. When he addresses someone in the halls he doesn't say, "Hello." Instead he greets his students by saying "what’s up?" or "Hey, how's it goin'?"

When I think of Mr. Rose the first thing that comes to my mind is his friendly personality. He is usually standing outside the classroom ready to greet and excite people about class that day. Mr. Rose always dressed in a professional manner for school. He always has an optimistic attitude even when things become nightmarish.
Mr. Rose is a very down to Earth type of person and you can see that when he talks to his students in the hallways. He loves to know what’s going on in your school life and your life outside of school. Mr. Rose is a true family man, he is devoted to his two daughters and his loving wife. Mr. Rose is very passionate about teaching, he loves to tell you other facts that you will never find in your textbooks. The way he speaks to students is astonishing, he doesn’t treat them like students, instead he speaks to students as people. This proves to me that he treats everyone with equal respect. He also never wants to see a student struggle in anything. This shows how he wants everyone to succeed in life, and he is willing to make that happen in anyway he can.
His classroom is welcoming to everyone who enters it, the classroom has posters related to what he teaches. He puts up his own drawings to show his artistic talent. On his desk he has pictures of his family that he has with him all the time, which provides proof of how proud he is of his family.
There hasn’t been a day that I haven’t walked by his room and not been asked how my classes are going or how I’ve been. All this combined shows how Mr. Rose truly cares for his students.

When I think of Ms. Smith I think that she is a fun outgoing person. She seems to be an up beat person as well as a great teacher. Although she really doesn’t greet people in the hallway, when you walk into her classroom she greets with a smile. Her class room is very warm and inviting, and whenever you don’t understand something all you have to do is tell her and she will go over it as many times as you need her to. She dresses in a laid back but professional way.

I was torn between two teachers, the other is Ms. Biddinger. She is a fun and very smart teacher. In the mornings she is always in the hallway waiting to say ‘hello’. Her class is fun and laid back, she is very sarcastic and loves to make jokes, but don’t be fooled Ms. B is very serious about Latin and teaching in general. She’s dresses up everyday except Friday when she wears jeans and that Spotsy t-shirt. She loves to play games and help her students learn. And her room, well that is Latin central, she uses fun posters and banners to decorate.

My first choice for this assignment was an amazing teacher that I had in middle school named Mr. Longfellow. But I was advised to make this blog about a teacher at Spotsy High instead. So here goes.
I decided to write about my favorite teacher at the school, Mr. O'Quinn. He is the theater teacher and rightfully so. He is always comfortable with his students. You can tell he's just a guy who didn't want to grow up and so he relates to his students in the way he knows best, through theater. He'll always be the first to tell you what you need to work on for a scene, or the first to jump on stage and improve a hilarious scene. He dresses as casual as you can and be a teacher. Plain button up shirts and comfortable pants and shoes. In the winter he grows a beard, he says it's to keep his face warm. He always waits outside the room to greet every student that is excited as he is to be there. If you don't like theater or absolute crazy fun, then he is not the teacher for you. My sister had him before I did, I've had him for three years now and I am an aid for him. His room always has lists of the latest shows going on around the area so that you can go see them. He also has the classic faces of theater (happy and sad face masks) on the wall for the full drama experience every student is looking for. He's always happy to know not only about what you do in theater, but with other things too. He is a truly caring teacher. He has come to see me play for soccer and always asks me how Monica (my older sister) is doing. You can just tell that he cares about his students. He's a very down to earth man, not only with his job and students, but with his family. He is very passionate about his wife and three young children and will always be happy to tell you all about them. Although he plays many roles, you can always tell what the real O'Quinn is trying to say. He's a pretty cool dude.

I had Mr. O'Quinn my freshman year for drama and I completley agree with Aggy. He is very friendly and really does care. He stands outside and greets students he doesn't know. If someone isn't acting themselves he's the first to talk to them to make sure he or she is ok. He's also the first to notice his students' new haircuts, etc.
